I’ve been meaning to make these for ages!
One thing that always stresses me out when thinking about cleaning products especially the ones are made by big brands is the thought: but how clean does a thing have to be? We are sold millions of different cleaning products most of them claiming killing every bacteria there is, removing every organism that shouldn’t be there and claiming disinfected safety for yourself and your loved ones.
But just how much cleaning is too much?
And I don’t mean now how OCD we can get about cleaning but I guess it could be related (in which case it’s hard to help about it), but I mean how much cleanliness is too much? Are we overusing and misusing chemicals in order to reach perfectly sanitised and disinfected homes? The answer is yes. Well, not everyone, but a lot of us.
This is not only bad for the environment but it’s also a serious health risk: the now common household cleaning products containing these cheap and harsh chemicals are now known to have an effect on human health and can cause many problems from cancer to infertility.
So let’s focus on bleach now. The regular use of bleach is linked to causing increased risk of developing fatal lung conditions. So apart from the fact that it only bleaches the limescale but it doesn’t remove it – it’s harmful for both the environment and you.
Luckily, natural cleaning products can solve this problem.
Here come the home made toilet fizzies. Containing only 3 ingredients (plus very little water).
How to make home made toilet bombs
Super simple. All you need is bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, some nice smelling essential oil of your choice and a little water.
Ingredients:
1 cup of soda bicarbonate (200ml)
1/4 cup of citric acid (50ml)
20 -25 drops of essential oil – you can use any, but tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint and lemon are widely known as natural disinfectants and cleaners and they also have a conventional scent of cleanliness.
Very little water.
You will also need a spray top bottle, a bowl and silicone mold.
Method:
Combine the bicarb and the citric acid in a bowl. Add the essential oil drops and mix again. Add one spray of water to the mixture. Mix again and spoon the mixture into the mold. You will need very very little water, just that the mixture holds shape. If you add too much water the mixture will start fizzing.
Let it set overnight – and it’s ready to use. Store them in an airtight container.
