I’m all in when it comes to saving food from going to waste. I try all sorts of different ways to use up everything I have, but in all honesty, I enjoy being creative with saving food.
But it’s also important to save what we can. Food waste – as we have probably all heard it lately on the news is a major contributor to climate change. Between 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten and that is a staggering figure. Which means that we waste lots of energy, resources and of course it’s also a moral problem. It also exhausts natural resources which leads to accelerated degradation of natural habitats.
Composting is a good thing, but it’s not always an option (especially if you live in a city and you don’t have a garden) but not creating that food waste in the first place is much better for the environment.
So… bread crusts and bread ends… they often get wasted. Lately, my lovely daughter has decided not to eat bread crusts because all of a sudden she hates them. Yep. So I cut them off when making her school lunch (usual sandwich, but that’s what she gets if she doesn’t want to the eat school meal) otherwise she leaves a big chunk of bread in her lunch box uneaten, classified as “crusts”.
Then I decided to make something with them. So I came up with this:

Cinnamon Sugar Bread Ends With Caramelised Pears
Basically all you need to do is, cut up the the ends and crusts into long pieces. Add some margarine or oil to a pan and toss them with sugar and ground cinnamon until they are toasted and the sugar is caramelised. Delicious cinnamon sugar bread ends!
For the caramelised pears, you just cut up the pears or actually apples if you’ve got those, 3-4 pieces of whole fruits. In a small pan mix them with some margarine (or butter) add some sugar and cinnamon and cook them until the sugar is caramelised and the fruit is soft. Mine got a bit mushy but I like it that way.
Serve them immediately.

What do you think? I think it’s purely delicious and quite moorish. Would you give it a try? Takes about 10 minutes, I recon you can cut up and freeze the bread ends and make this on a weekend morning.
