As I write this, thinking about Earth Day, which earlier this week and how we need to celebrate Mother Earth not just one day a year and maybe switching the lights off for an hour but every day by taking small steps that can change the future for the better.
We all know that plastic and our throwaway lifestyle is a massive problem. Children toys are unfortunately also part of the problem. Not because they are single use but because how easily they break, parts get lost and all these little bits and pieces adds up to the big problem of plastic toys. Not to mention when they loose an important part and stop functioning. The whole toy can be thrown away! So it is an issue, undoubtedly and we need to be mindful of what kind of toys are we buying for our children.
This is why I’d like to introduce you to Jaques London, a heritage toymaker of wooden toys.
About Jaques
Founded in 1795, Jaques is the oldest games company and sports manufacturer in the world. Passed down from father to son for six generations, Jaques have been responsible for inventing many well known games, such as Croquet, Ping Pong, Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, Tiddledy Winks, The Staunton Chess Set, Happy Families, Snap and many more. Today, Jaques still a family business: Ben, Emmett and Joe Jaques run it.
The games and toys are clever, fun and educational, encouraging team play, strategic thinking, fine motor skills, logic – they are designed by UK teachers. There are indoor and outdoor games available also promoting being outside and having fun.
Their pricing is very affordable, which makes their beautiful wooden toys even more attractive.
I chose two games from their collection: a Tumble Tower (RRP £13.99 currently on sale £9.99) and Chinese Checkers & Gobang (RRP £14.99) for the whole family to play together. The Chinese Checkers & Gobang is a two in one game set so it’s a great value.

What I adored about the packaging too is the simple elegance yet still as environmentally friendly as possible: there were no unnecessary plastics and the the carton box looks really stylish with the black fonts and a black ribbon. They make a great gift for anyone.
And the games are of course lots of fun!
