Conservatories and orangeries have a special place in my hear – always been my favourite place in the house. Why? Because they normally have lots of lights even in winter which instantly boost your mood when entering. They are a perfect place for relaxing, reading, having a cup of coffee or sitting down for a chat. A conservatory or single-storey extension can be built without seeking planning permission first if they meet with the current regulation. Adding one would not only provide you with some extra living space but it will mean a significant added value if you want to sell your property. If you are looking at ways of increasing their home’s square footage, consider building one.
These are my favourite designs I would add if I was to built a conservatory:
Double or triple glazed windows and glass doors

Bifold doors can merge the home and garden and let even more light in – and fresh air in summer. Extra lights
In winter, you will need some extra light. Not necessarily ceiling lights, but maybe a pair floor lamps with warm light bulbs which would also offer a cosy evening when you use the conservatory after dusk. Lights are also important to consider if your conservatory has another function too, like dining area.
Exotic plants
I can’t imagine a conservatory or orangery without large exotic plants in every other corner (space for large plants is bound to be limited). A couple of lush palm trees, cacti or citrus trees would be perfect but you can even add some lovely climbers too.
Conservatory furniture
Really depends of the function – but generally, something different than living room furniture would be good. Or, if you can add a whole new style to this living space to stand out. Weather you prefer rattan, classic lounge or antique style – just to mention a few, they could all work well in the conservatory.
Heating
Even if you are keeping the cold out with double or triple glazed windows – you still add heating outlets to your conservatory to keep it warm and most importantly damp free. Naturally, you’ll need slimline, low height heaters that are specifically sized for conservatories. The best is when each unit is controlled via a time and temperature set thermostat, meaning you’ll only heat the room when required.
