This winter has been bad: I was ill for about 7-8 weeks with flu and ended up at the A&E with chest pain, x-ray and antibiotics twice. I wasn’t looking after myself properly and in December I did work a lot – like a lot of other people, just before Christmas.
So we do various things to avoid this as much as possible like taking vitamins, trying to eat healthy and exercise – but we do this anyway, still, these sicknesses crack the immune system at some point and we’re ill again. Which is not a parade in general, but when you’re sick and have to look after your family, that’s even worse.
But as part of my new year resolution – I’m now doing more for my health. I do yoga more often, taking vitamins and although I’m a vegetarian, I eat a lot of vegan food these days.
And I take care of my gut health in particular. Looking after your gut is important and there are a number of simple ways to go about this. Drinking lots of water and having a balanced diet packed full of fresh fruit and vegetables is key and lays the foundations for a healthy lifestyle going forwards. As the old adage goes, you are what you eat and this has never been more true when it comes to nurturing your microbiome.
Also known as ‘gut flora’, your microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms found in the intestine. These microorganisms help absorb nutrients from the food you eat and provide you with the energy you need for your day. In short, your gut microbiome has a huge impact on day to day health. Lifestyle choices that take supporting your microbiome into consideration can be beneficial on a number of levels, not least in supporting a healthy digestive system.
What is VSL#3?
VSL#3 is a highly concentrated poly-biotic, delivering high levels of good bacteria across eight different strains to help maintain a healthy gut microbiome. Every daily portion contains 450 billion bacteria and each of the different strains has been specifically selected and then freeze-dried, so that they will survive the harsh conditions of the stomach. This allows them to reach and colonise the gut, where they help maintain a healthy digestive system.
Easy and convenient to take, I add it to a smoothie. VSL#3 helps maintain your gut flora, it is an ideal way to support your healthy gut microbiome and help maintain a healthy digestive system.
I have a special code if you buy them clicking on their website: use VSL#20 to get 20% off. (T&C’s apply, offer ends Dec 2020)
Why is gut health important?
A healthy gut contributes to a strong immune system, heart and brain health, our mood, and naturally to digestion, and it may even help prevent some cancers and autoimmune diseases. So, to strengthen the immune system’s shields just before the flu seasons knocks on the door – this is very helpful.
A smoothie recipe to mix it in
The best way to take these daily, is to stir it in a smoothie. That will give an extra boost for your immune system and will get you into the habit of making one every day.
I used my recent favourite smoothie recipe for this:
- 2 tablespoon of dairy-free yogurt (or any dairy yogurt you like)
- 100 ml oat milk
- 3-4 larger leaves of spinach
- a few pieces of blueberries
- a teaspoon of chia seeds
- water or crushed ice, depending how thick or thin you like it
