The autumn and winter season for us (families with young children) is an endless battle with colds, flus and other nasty germs. It’s impossible to avoid them as the children keep picking up one after the other in school and in nursery. Even if they get flu vaccinations (which they do) it seems like we’re down with a bug or a sickness every other week.
So we do various things to avoid this as much as possible like taking vitamins, trying to eat healthy and exercise – but we do this anyway, still, these sicknesses crack the immune system at some point and we’re ill again. Which is not a parade in general, but when you’re sick and have to look after your family, that’s even worse.
So before the real flu season starts, I’ve been trying to add a little more boost to the system with the help of VSL#3. (If you want to try it after reading my post, I’ve been given a discount code I can share with my readers: FruitBox – for 20% off VSL#3 orders online)
What is VSL#3?
VSL#3 is a highly concentrated poly-biotic food supplement product consisting of 8 strains of live freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria from the following bacterial species:
- Streptococcus thermophilus
- Bifidobacterium breve
- Bifidobacterium longum
- Bifidobacterium infantis
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- Lactobacillus paracasei
- Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus
VSL#3 helps maintain your gut flora, it is an ideal way to support your healthy gut microbiome and help maintain a healthy digestive system.
Why is gut health important?
A healthy gut contributes to a strong immune system, heart and brain health, our mood, and naturally to digestion, and it may even help prevent some cancers and autoimmune diseases. So, to strengthen the immune system’s shields just before the flu seasons knocks on the door – this is very helpful.
A smoothie recipe to mix it in
The best way to take these daily, is to stir it in a smoothie. That will give an extra boost for your immune system and will get you into the habit of making one every day.
I used my recent favourite smoothie recipe for this:
- 2 handfuls of blueberries
- 1 handful of curly kale
- 1/2 banana
- 1 orange squeezed
- 1 tsp of beetroot powder
- water or crushed ice, depending how thick or thin you like it
- mint leaves
