Over the past 2 years I have tried some new and eco-friendly menstrual care products. One thing I quickly learned on this journey: one size doesn’t fit all. We are all different and so when it comes to period products this applies all the same. This is (too) everyone’s delicate matter, a private decision what kind of menstrual care solution they use. I believe, this is a very intimate decision so pushing someone towards something very new might not be the best. I’ve learnt, as I spoke to many other fellow women, that no matter how great and eco-friendly are menstrual cups are, they are not the best for everyone. Or even tampons. Tampons with or without applicators. Sanitary pads. We all have our preferences and sometimes decade old habits are not so easy to break.
However, we can all all agree on one thing: all of the above mentioned products can be and MUST be made of materials that are environmentally friendly. Regular period products are made of a lot of nasty stuff, much like nappies. A conventional sanitary pad is made of up to 90% plastic – another is that a pack of menstrual pads is equivalent to 4 plastic bags . Tampons have plastic in them too – even in the string – and plastic applicators are made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). And other chemicals. All of this of course cannot be recycled, they go straight to landfill as they are classified as medical waste.
This is why whichever period product is our preference, we need to look into swapping it for an eco-friendly version.
So, I’d like to introduce Yoppie, the natural menstrual care: totally natural, biodegradable & organic with absolutely no nasties. The products are made of organic cotton because a its safer, more natural and eco-friendly solution and made in the UK & Spain and only tested by humans. Yoppie works a subscription, any product or combination of period care products you need delivered automatically each month or quarter, in handy packs designed to fit through your letterbox. Skip, pause, change or cancel your subscription at any time. Before making up your mind, you can order trial products.
Yoppie has different sizes of non-applicator tampons (regular, super and super plus), panty liners and day or night pads, so you can perfectly customise your subscription to your needs. The pads and the tampons are biodegradable. 100% certified organic cotton grown without harmful pesticides, purified without chlorine bleach and crafted without fragrances or synthetics (hypoallergenic friendly). The individual wrappers are all recycled plastic they can go into the recycling bin, HOWEVER, they’re looking to transit to something even better soon! (I find it fantastic how a small, indie brand like Yoppie CAN and WANT to change things for the better and invest into their production line, obviously sacrifying a part of their profit. Whilst if you look at big labels turning over millions of dollars and not changing anything and keep polluting…)
I’ve tested all these products over the last few days and I have been really happy with them. They are leak-proof and I know that this can be an issue for those already gave birth and those with heavy periods. They are cruelty free, approved by GOTS and the Organic Soil Association. The price of the products are very reasonable. I’ve just looked at the price of a mainstream brand and the prices are pretty much the same. But of course Yoppie comes to you with free shipping so you don’t have to go to buy it and won’t harm your body nor the environment with nasty chemicals. Try them.
