Food shopping on a green way

I love discovering independent businesses which are also doing their best to make their products eco-friendly and ethical as possible. For me, making a purchase decision these two factors matter. Especially, when it comes to food. Whilst I still shop at supermarkets, I’m consciously shifting my food purchases towards small shops, local producers like farms and local markets.

Fairfields Farm crisps

Fairfields Farm Snacks

Fairfields Farm products are my latest discovery. The farm is located in the Colne Valley, in Colchester, Essex surrounded by beautiful countryside. It is an independent, family-run business. Since 2017 all of the energy used to produce their potato soup are generated on the farm using sustainable technologies including anaerobic digestion and solar power. Even the waste sunflower oil used to cook the handbook the crisps goes to make biofuel! The farm produces twelve different potato varieties, which is important for ensure diversity. Currently, they have potato chips and lentil bites in their snack range.

Our review

We have tested the Heat & Eat range from Fairfileds Farm: the sea salted ones (with tomato salsa) and the cheese and chive flavour (with caramelised onion dip). These are microwaveable potato crisps, which are also gluten free. The instructions to prepare the hot crisps are clear and easy to follow. The hot crisps are delicious – I have never had hot crisps before and the idea is quite genius. These are the first microwaveable potato crisps ever! With the salsa and dip they really make a perfect movie night snack or sharing snack for any occasion. I do like potato crisps, I really do. I don’t really have sweet tooth but I have a savoury snack tooth instead. So as a crisps expert, I totally loved these potato crisps! Naturally, both the children loved them too. (They too love their potato crisps.)

Comments

  1. I love Sea Salted because the gorgeous potato flavour shines through.

  2. Depends on my mood, somethings just salted, sometimes sweet chilli.

  3. I usually tend to go for a cheesy flavour but every now and again I go through a phase of preferring salted.

  4. Cheese, sour cream & chive, salted, or occasionally salt & vinegar. It changes frequently! And I’m always on the lookout for a new favourite.

  5. Plain/salted are my favourite crisps. Or salt and vinegar if there’s no plain left!

  6. Has to be cheese & onion though I love eating them with salt & vinegar crisps too

  7. Sea Salted – with Salt & Vinegar coming a very close second :o)

  8. I absolutely adore Balsamic Vinegar & Sea Salt flavoured crisps – scrummy!

  9. OOOH any really lol, haven’t found a flavour I don’t like. Even tried Hedgehog flavour years and years ago. But I do, if I had to choose, love BBQ and Cheese and Onion.

  10. Ready salted with extra salt, my all time favourite were Oxo crisps though

  11. I love salt and vinegar (im kinda gross i like to suck the flavour off and then eat the crisps after lol)
