5 Tips for Becoming a Vegan for Beginners

1) Know the definition of veganism

If you’ve ever started your research on the vegan diet you will know that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of results that try to explain what it is and more importantly, what foods are actually vegan. You’ll get queries asking from  “is ice cream vegan”  to “can I wear leather”? The answer to both of these is no.

Contrary to vegeterianism, vegans don’t consume any products derived from animals. According to The Vegan Society, veganism is “A lifestyle that avoids all animal foods such as meat, dairy, eggs and honey; animal derived products like leather; and, as far as possible, products tested on animals.”

It’s important to know the full aspects of being vegan before you commit to the lifestyle. Of course, there’s no law that says you have to be vegan and do it by the book. However, the more educated you are the more connected you will feel to the cause you are supporting.

2) Create a plant-based foods menu

Once you’re committed to being vegan, the next step in becoming a vegan for beginners you should take is to purge out your fridge and cupboards (donating any foods you can’t use, of course) and make a list of the plant-based foods that you do enjoy. A lot of people go from vegeterianism to veganism in a gradual progression, but if you’re jumping on board from omnivore to vegan you should be aware of the foods that you enjoy the most.

A plant-based diet will become easier for you to stick to if you know what meals and recipes you can easily go to. If you’ve been transitioning from a vegetarian meal plan you’ll be able to see that the transition may be easier as many vegetarian meals can be adapted to be full vegan meals. With a little imagination you can have load of meals that will help you have a healthy diet.

3) Find meat substitutes

There are many meat substitues on the market now – from vegan cheese to vegan mince. These are perfect to have to hand for those families that are taking veganism on together. Kids that are transitioning to a vegan diet tend to be used to the texture of mince meat or may ask for a cheese toastie without realising that it’s no longer on the menu.

This is why meat substitutes are many times a good way to make adopting a vegan diet much more realistic for some families or individuals.

4) Eat a balanced diet

A vegan diet is a very balanced diet in and of itself. What are the basics and essentials for getting started on a vegan diet?

If you want a base of what your vegan diet should include;

  • whole grains,
  • leafy greens,
  • nutritional yeast,
  • sweet potatoes,
  • olive oil,
  • soy products like soy milk,
  • plant-based proteins,
  • lots of fresh fruits.

That’s just a fraction of what you can have to hand to get started. The best thing is that you can have your favorite foods on a vegan diet – yes, you can have a veggie burger! Plant-based eating isn’t boring at all, there are a wide variety of foods that you can use to make some delicious vegan meals.

5) Get all of your nutrients

The vegan diet can get a bad rap when it comes to its nutritional value and nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, people think that vegans don’t get enough nutrients which leads to vitamin deficiencies as well as confusion about becoming a vegan for beginners.
