Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread

chocolate banana bread

Sometimes all it takes, is a little bit of chocolate powder. This vegan chocolate banana bread recipe is just an update to my favourite vegan banana bread recipe, simply by adding a few spoonfuls of cocoa powder.

So instead of the usual blurb – I don’t even have any for you anyway – I will talk about why is it important to by fair trade cocoa powder.

The impact of modern cacao production impacts both the environment and people. Most of the world’s chocolate comes from West Africa.

Cacao plantations take a long time to be profitable; a cacao tree doesn’t produce seeds until its third or fourth year, and can produce for up to 40 years. In West Africa, forests are being cut down to make room for more cacao plantations. This leads to cascading environmental catastrophes, including local effects like habitat loss, diversity loss, and desertification, as well as global effects on climate from the release of carbon into the atmosphere. Also, cacao farming in West Africa relies heavily on dangerous petrochemicals which further degrade soil and water quality.

Millions of cocoa farmers work extremely hard, under gruelling conditions, yet often don’t earn enough in return to cover their own basic needs – like decent food, housing and education. On average, cocoa farmers earn just 6% of the final value a bar of chocolate. Labor conditions on West African cacao farms are notoriously deplorable, and child labor is widely used even today

This is why it’s important to only buy chocolate that is fair trade certified. Fairtrade sets social, economic and environmental standards for both companies and farmers and workers.

And now the recipe – made with fairtrade cocoa powder:

Amazing! I love banana bread, adding cocoa powder makes it even more appealing. I tend to use oil in my cakes instead of butter too.

Well doesn’t this sound delicious?!? I like to swap out the sugar for honey when I make banana bread in an attempt to make it a bit healthier. But then the bag of choc chips I add most likely counteracts that, ha!
