I think the majority of the people have now gotten the hang of recycling. In the UK, most boroughs and councils have slightly different rules but you can check yours easily on the government website dedicated to recycling. The recycling rates are improving year on year too (see the stats here), however there is room for a lot of improvement. Household recycling is something everyone can easily get used to, it’s been decades since it was introduced and by now, everyone knows the major categories we need to select our rubbish into: paper & cardboard, glass, metal plastic, food scrap. The rest needs to go into recycling centres and other drop off points. It’s not rocket science and if we all do it the right way, we can make a real difference together. EKO sent me their Ecocasa Recycling Bin for a review – so let’s dug deeper in the topic first.
The importance of recycling properly
Proper recycling is important: the major issues tend to be either mixing the selective materials or contamination. When materials are mixed – it’s hard to separate them (well, it’s more work for the people who work at the recycling plant) and when they are soiled with food or other things, they cannot be cleaned at the plant. So often – because of these two issues present, whole bins of selective rubbish go into landfill or the incinerator.
Recycling starts inside your home
Proper recycling starts inside your home. Ideally, a small bin or bag for each different type of rubbish is required. You need to label them and teach your family to use them the correct way. It takes time, but they get used to the idea. In a household like ours – a dedicated recycling bin is a must. This takes the two main categories of trash: paper & cardboard and hard plastics, cans & glass. The, you just empty them into the outside recycling bins, when they are full. Clean them occasionally.
EKO Ecocasa Recycling Bin Review
Like I mentioned, having a solid, big bin for the main two recycling categories in a family household is the best thing to do. That way, most of the recycling is out of the way and neatly stored in a bin.
The EKO Ecocasa Recycling Bin is just the right size for this, I found. 30l + 30l is keeps us going for quite a few days without emptying them into the kerbside recycling bins. It’s a combined bin with two compartments next to each other which is really convenient. In case you forgot or even if it’s easier for the family members to remember: the bins are colour coded.
It really helps me to organise my kitchen space better and neater.
Here are the before and after photos:
I particularly like the stainless steel colour of the bin, because it just sits neatly right at the side of the fridge, blending in quietly. And that’s all what you want from a bin, apart from doing its job.
The bin is great quality and looks strong. It still lightweight to lift. The surface is fingerprint resistant stainless steel – this is very handy with two kids. It comes with 3 year guarantee – that’s a peace of mind.
