This is a collaborative post.

The Bauhaus Influence style consists of unusual forms, geometrics, abstract shapes, industrial materials, and simple colour schemes.

We seem to have a particular attraction again to all these aesthetic principles.

Ever wondered, though, where is this design approach originating?

We have traced it back to the Bauhaus style, and we will share with you the influences of the style type on modern décor. If you decide it is right for you, we have also put together a guide on how you can master the look.

So What is Bauhaus?

The Bauhaus was an influential German art and design movement (1919-1933) that hugely impacted interior design and modern furniture.

The school aimed to bring together art, design, and technology to improve a mass-produced object’s functional and aesthetic qualities, particularly low-cost items.

What Design Style is Bauhaus?

The style of Bauhaus, commonly characterised as a combination of the Arts and Crafts Movement with modernism.

This style aims to bring art back into contact with everyday life, and the Bauhaus core objective was a radical concept: to reimagine the material world to reflect the unity of all skills.

Basic Cornerstones

  • Favours linear and geometrical forms
  • Form follows function
  • A beautiful union between art and mass-produced elements
  • Unusual materials and artistic flair
  • Accent on primary colours
  • Avoids unnecessary ornamentations
  • Abstract shapes featuring no historical nods
  • Focus on line, shape, and colour
  • Avoids floral designs

Although the style was at its peak in the 1930s, it works particularly as a contemporary interior design style.

So if you are after a décor that is easy to live in, but still allows for individual expression, here’s what you need to know.

  • Focus on Function

Bauhaus interiors were known for their simplicity. For the Bauhaus movement, utility comes first. The iconic furniture that did adorn the homes was always highly intentional.

Include only essential elements and use the smallest number of different materials.

The Bauhaus represents the idea that minimalism and functionality can be joyful.

It’s about making your home streamlined but still express yourself while doing so.

  • Embrace Honest Materials

The school of Bauhaus taught its students not to modify or hide materials for the sake of aesthetics.

One of the architecture’s characteristics included basic industrial materials such as concrete, metal, brick, steel, and glass.

When it comes to your bedroom, going for a metal bed could bring a nice Bauhaus touch to your décor.

  • Welcome Unusual Shapes

There is a certain playfulness in this style.

Unusual shapes appreciate beautiful things, a focus on balanced forms, and a fantastic drama and flair.

The Bauhaus style allows for individual expression and unexpected juxtapositions. That’s how innovative designs such as the Wassily Chair, the MR10 chair, and the Basculante chair were born.

  • Choose a Basic Colour Palette

When one thinks of the Bauhaus, one invariably thinks of the primary colours blue, red and yellow, and the basic shapes triangle, circle, and square typically used at the institution.

If you are not a big fan of bold yellows and reds in your bedroom décor, the style allows for lighter colours such as white, beige, and grey.

The Bauhaus aesthetics continue to influence architects, interior designers, and artists.

It continues to inspire with modern twists and contemporary touches.

So if you thought the Bauhaus is part of the past, we hope you’ll reconsider it, and now that you have the tools to do so, why not give it a try?
